Bhagat Contributors to the Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji(SGGS)
A Bhagat is the slave of his Master. He does not, like intellectual elites, believe in the existence and omnipresence of God after seeking rational, intellectual explanation. Rather he feels emotional love & oneness with Him. He feels pleasure in treading on the sharp edge of a sword to realise his ultimate objective, even if he has to sacrifice everything in the process. He does not want, nor ends up achieving material profit or gain, but feels most profited in offering his head to his Guru or God. The act of Bhagati is extremely difficult indeed & requires entry into the path of the Beloved Lord with head preferred on the palm. Guruji states:

The lifestyle of the devotees is unique and distinct.

The devotees' lifestyle is unique and distinct; they follow the most difficult path.

They renounce greed, avarice, egotism and desire; they do not talk too much.

The path they take is sharper than a two-edged sword, and finer than a hair.

By Guru's Grace, they shed their selfishness and conceit; their hopes are merged in the Lord.

Says Nanak, the lifestyle of the devotees, in each and every age, is unique and distinct. ||14||

The Bhagats are analysed in Chronological order.
Guru Arjan Dev ji, the 5th Guru of the Sikhs, included in Siri Guru Granth Sahib ji; the hymns of the Gurus, but also these select few holy man, whose utterances improved the spirito-religious, social & ethical life of the masses. If he included the hymns of Bhagat Pipa, a King, he also included the hymns of Bhagat Namdev, a Calico printer, and Bhagat Ravidas, a Cobbler, in the same way, irrespective of social divides such as caste. This unique approach had never previously been seen, and mankind is indebted to him for this.
